Mitzi Gaynor, the bubbly actress, singer, and dancer known for her role in “South Pacific,” has died. She passed away on Thursday in Los Angeles at the age of 93. Rene Reyes and Shane Rosamonda confirmed her death.
Gaynor’s career took off when she landed the lead role of Nellie Forbush in the 1958 film adaptation of “South Pacific.” The part was one of the most sought-after movie roles of the mid-20th century.
The film’s producers faced a challenge in casting the lead. Mary Martin, who played Nellie on Broadway, wasn’t considered for the movie. At the time, Martin was in her 40s and thought to be too old for the part. There were also concerns that her strong voice might overshadow potential male co-stars.
Other actresses were in the running for the role. Doris Day was considered, and Elizabeth Taylor was wanted by Mike Todd. But Gaynor had an edge over her competitors. She was the only candidate who agreed to do a screen test.
In the film, Gaynor played Nellie Forbush, a World War II Navy nurse described in the musical as a “cockeyed optimist.” The movie was based on the 1949 Broadway production by Rodgers and Hammerstein, which starred Mary Martin and Ezio Pinza. By the time the film was made in 1958, Pinza had passed away, adding to the casting challenges.
“South Pacific” was one of seven musicals Gaynor appeared in during her film career. She made a total of 12 movies before leaving the film industry as the era of movie musicals came to an end.
Gaynor’s portrayal of Nellie Forbush in “South Pacific” remains her most memorable role, cementing her place in Hollywood history.
