Rita Carrey, the older sister of actor Jim Carrey, died on November 14, 2024. She passed away peacefully, surrounded by her family and friends.
Alex, Rita’s husband of 16 years, shared the news on Facebook the following day. The couple had gotten married in an outdoor ceremony in July 2023.
Rita grew up in Canada near Toronto with her siblings Jim, John, and Patricia. Her parents were Kathleen and Percy Carrey. She worked in music and media, co-hosting a radio show and producing The Peet & Reet Show.
People who knew Rita described her as someone with a loving soul who always wanted to help others, even strangers. She filled everyone’s heart with joy and was seen as a beautiful and talented woman.
Christmas was Rita’s favorite holiday. She had started a fundraiser for a local charity, showing her love for helping others.
“Goodbye my lover. Goodbye my friend. Until we meet again. You really did have the Time of your life.”
Alex wrote these words in his tribute to Rita. He called her his “bestest friend,” lover, and beautiful wife. The couple had traveled the world together and met many people they considered friends during their “wonderful and crazy journey.”
A candlelight vigil will take place on December 7, 2024, at Heathcote Terrace in St. Catharines to remember Rita. The event will be part of a larger public event called Christmas on the Terrace, which will benefit Gillian’s Place.
People can honor Rita’s memory by donating to Gillian’s Place. They can give money directly or at the event. The charity also accepts non-perishable food, children’s clothing, toiletry items, and unwrapped children’s presents.
