Disney has taken the untitled 2026 Star Wars movie off their release calendar. They’ve put Ice Age 6 in its place, set to come out on December 18, 2026.
The Star Wars movie was going to be the first live-action film in the franchise since 2019’s “The Rise of Skywalker.” That movie, directed by JJ Abrams, wrapped up the Skywalker Saga that started way back in 1977 with “A New Hope.”
The pulled movie was supposed to take place 15 years after “The Rise of Skywalker,” making it the furthest point in the Star Wars timeline we’ve seen on screen. Rumors said it would focus on Rey trying to start a new Jedi Academy. Daisy Ridley was expected to come back as Rey.
Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, a filmmaker and journalist known for her documentary “Saving Face” and work on the Marvel series “Ms. Marvel,” was set to direct. But the project has had some bumps in the road. Steven Knight is no longer writing the script, and earlier versions by Damon Lindelof and Justin Britt-Gibson have been scrapped.
The movie was supposed to start filming in early 2024, but that didn’t happen. Even so, Disney says it’s still working on the project.
While we wait for more news on this movie, Star Wars fans can look forward to “The Mandalorian & Grogu.” This big-screen version of the popular Disney+ show started filming this year and will hit theaters on May 22, 2026.
