Chloe Grace Moretz, the 27-year-old star of “Kick-Ass,” came out as gay and endorsed Kamala Harris for US President. The Hollywood actor shared her decision on Instagram as she cast an early vote for the 2024 election.
Moretz explained her support for Harris, focusing on women’s rights and LGBTQ+ protections. She said:
“I voted early and I voted for Kamala Harris. There is so much on the line this election.”
The actor stressed the importance of bodily autonomy for women. Moretz believes Harris will defend this right, stating:
“I believe the government has no right over my body as a woman, and that the decisions over my body should come only from myself and my doctor. Kamala Harris will protect that for us.”
As a gay woman, Moretz also highlighted the need for LGBTQ+ protections:
“I believe in the need for legal protections that protect the LGBTQ+ community as a gay woman. We need protections in this country and to have access to the care we need and deserve.”
LGBTQ+ rights have become a key issue in this election. About 38% of Americans consider these rights when voting, with 30% only supporting candidates who align with their views on the matter.
Harris, the Democratic nominee for US President, has a long history of supporting LGBTQ+ rights. As San Francisco’s district attorney in 2004, she officiated some of the first same-sex marriages, though these were later overturned. During her time as California’s attorney general, Harris refused to defend Proposition 8, which banned same-sex marriage.
Her record also includes creating a hate crime unit for LGBTQ+ youth and opposing the ‘panic defense’ in court. In the Senate, Harris pushed for anti-discrimination policies and backed Title IX expansions for LGBTQ+ students, though the Supreme Court blocked this effort.
Harris’s running mate, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, also has a strong record on LGBTQ+ advocacy. He’s supported gay-straight alliances in schools since the 1990s.
The Republican stance on LGBTQ+ rights has shifted over time. While Donald Trump once supported domestic partnerships and pledged to protect the LGBTQ+ community in 2016, his administration rolled back several protections for transgender individuals.
As the election approaches, Harris and Walz continue to campaign on their commitment to women’s and LGBTQ+ rights, with endorsements like Moretz’s adding star power to their message.
